Chuck Spielman wanted to record the story of his life in his own words, to pass on to his children and grandchildren the experiences that had shaped him and the life lessons he had learned. Only Yesterday is that story.
The son of a Chevrolet dealer, at a very young age Spielman developed a natural interest in all things automobile. He grew up in the 1940s and ’50s helping out on the weekends in the car business that his father and uncle owned. He expected to go into the military when he finished school, and eventually to take on a role in the family business. But when he graduated from college with a B.A. in 1965, the Vietnam war was underway. He was able to defer going into the Army as he worked to complete a Master’s degree in 1967. That same year he met Amy Schwartz, the love of his life, and reported to the Army for duty.
Chuck and Amy married in 1968, and she joined him during Officer Candidate School. When that was complete, he served in the U. S. Army in Vietnam, investigating the disappearance of funds and surviving several close calls in the field. When he completed his tour of duty, he came home to find that his father and uncle had retired and sold their car business. As he and Amy started their family, he would have to find a different career.
The book tells the entwined stories of his career in commercial real estate in New York City, his interest in classic cars, and his developing a museum to house his cars and to present World War II as a series of exhibits telling personal stories of those who participated in the War.
Chuck Spielman’s story-telling ability and his direct, honest, conversational style makes this a book to be enjoyed well beyond the author’s family.
